Going on vacation is something that we just don’t get up and do. It’s something that you research carefully for months. You take into consideration the duration of the trip (days, weeks, or months) and the sites you want to see, and of course your budget.
How can I extend my budget and get the most out of my vacation, is always always a question. Once I arrive how will I get around?
This is very important. If you’re going to rent a car is not going to be as enjoyable for you if your driving; as it will be be for your passengers. You have to keep your eyes on the road, and avoid getting lost. So much for seeing the sites.
Relax, use local transportation and reduce the stressors of driving while on vacation.
The use of public transportation when you travel can help you relax, reduce stress, and stay within budget; here are some proven tips that help:
Hotel or Lodgings
Find a place withing your budget that is close to a train, tram, ferry or bus station.
This can be a hotel, motel or apartment. Just make sure you are close to a train, bus or tram station.
Know the schedules, late night cab fares can be expensive.
Public Train System
Most most countries have railway systems, and they will transport you to their most interesting sites.
You can save money by buying a daily, weekly or monthly train pass.
It’s always useful to ask for a map of the route.
Some local trains even have two levels.
Long term passes are usually cheaper and give you unlimited access to their system. In most countries you can buy these tickets in advance.
In Europe, consider the Eurail/Interail pass. This is quite cost effective especially if you are travelling long distances.
Plan ahead. Most countries require a train reservation when traveling across borders.
The Public Bus System – The public bus system is simple to use. It’s the most taken for granted transport, world wide.
Most countries have a detailed schedule of their route and fares in the bus stop or at their terminal.
One of the great things about the bus system is that it allows you to sit behind a large glass window and enjoy the sites.
World wide, the public bus system usually covers the shopping center, most government buildings and sites, museums and parks. They also make it easy to find good restaurants.
Metro area buses usually offer a more frequent, and comfortable service.
Trams – Many Tram Systems have unlimited card services. You can buy a daily, weekly, or monthly card or passes to enjoy their services.
Tickets are usually valid across their whole network from the time of purchase. Allowing you to take as many journeys; as you choose within your chosen time frame.
Trams like buses usually pass right in front of most popular sites and tourist attractions.
General Concerns about Safety in Public Transportation
Some general concerns about public transportation are personal safety and pick pockets.
As of rule of caution, avoid solitaire bus stations; as well as exterior Train or Tram stations near wooded areas if you are alone or if there is no one else in the area.
If approached by a suspicious person, speak to the person in the local language if known, or about local nearby places. It means you know the area.
This way your shirt or polo covers your pockets.
Most shirts and polos if worn outside the pants will cover your pockets.
This is also is more relaxing, and makes it difficult to tell if you have your wallet or not.
Do not place your wallet in your back pocket
Inserting your wallet the long way in your back pocket, can result in it being easily removed. If you must use your back pocket, insert it the wide way.
The width will make it hard to pull out, even for you.
Use your Front Pockets
Which front pocket is best to use? The one on the side of the hand you write with. That hand is usually busy, it’s constantly in motion. Moving as you walk, as you talk, blocking everything in it’s path. The best thing is, that it’s all natural. When you think about it, this natural process has sometimes caused you embarrasment.
Remember when you hit someone by mistake as you walked by them, because your arms were swinging. That hand is usually the one you write with. You did not mean to hit them. It was embarrasing when it happened.
The hand you struck, was in your protected area. That is the space we sub-consciously reserve as our private domain when we walk down the street. Nonetheless, it’s embarrasing when we collide, but what if it saved your wallet.
Carrying a Laptop, Tablet or Purse
If you must carry a large bag because you need your laptop, tablet, medicines or baby articles in it. Make sure it has a long strong strap.
Wear it across your chest.
Do not hang it over one shoulder; it can be easily removed.
Wearing it across your chest, makes it difficult to move.
Travelling the World
This method also helps distribute the weight of the bag across your torso. Remember pick pockets and muggers are looking for easy prey.
A person with a bag across their chest to a prowler means pulling, wrestling and arguing with them to get the bag, and increasing the chance of being arrested during the struggle.
The point is don’t let negative things keep you from having a good time and saving money.
