Foreign Food and Travel
Traveling means seeing new sites and tasting new dishes. Besides taking a tour a large part of the travel experience is trying the native dishes. It’s exciting to savour new spices and fill our senses with new aromas. It can make or break your vacation.
We all have memories of something we ate on vacation that was just unforgettable. The combination of fruits, vegetables and spices used was just so tasteful that you never forget it. Once home we wish we can eat like that eveyday, but that thought is easily discarded. Mainly because we feel we have to start eating healthy again.
That means you beleive your diet during your vacation was inadequate. You ate all the wrong things.
Well that might not be the case. Restaurants are now more aware of their menus and ingredients, inclusive fast foods. The nutritional needs of the clients are constantly present in most food chains and in small business. Healthy eating starts with a concious decision to carefully chose the ingredients and spices in your food.
What’s on your plate?
There are foods that are just healthy, but not sought after – nonetheless they are in every country and culture. They are as generic as water. For example; chick peas, salmon, asparagus, and brown rice. They are everywhere, and are part of most diets.
Foreign Cuisine then – is simply a dish from another country.
Not something you have to give up after vacation.
When you travel it’s heavily recomended – to eat the local food. It’s cheaper and allows you to soak in the local culture.
Most local dishes incorporate some fruit or vegetable.
What makes them different. Usually. the spices…….
Herbs & Spices
Herbs and Spices come from different parts of the plant.
The spices mostly used in restaurants world wide are garlic, cumin, mint, vinegar, olive oil, thyme, sage, ginger, coriander, basil, parsley, lemon, and paprika.
An herb can come from the leaf of the plant. While a spice can come from the root, stem, seed of the plant.
Pure spices are the strongest in taste.
Let’s then focus on healthy eating during travel. It could be fun and it may just be the break your body needs.
Dieting and eating healthy can be more exciting and rewarding if the cuisine is foreign.
I know you probably try alot of things not included here, but give fruits and vegetables a chance – here are some reasons why:
Fruits are a great source of vitamins and fiber.
Appels are easy to find while you are on tour; they are in most hotels, motels, bed and breakfast and lodgings.
Apples are beleived to fight certain types of cancers, heart diseases, weight gain, and high cholesterol.
Some hotels have a bowl of green apples in the buffet table or front desk. They are great way of eating healthy while you tour.
They also make a great mid-morning snack.
Cantaloupes, Honeydews and Melons are good for breakfast, an excellent source of Vitamins A and C. Good for your vision and lungs. Most breakfast buffets serve them.
Oranges are rich in Vitamin C. Oranges have properties that have been associated with protection against stomach cancers and colds.
The scientific definition of vegetables pertains specifically to plant parts; that are edible.
Vegetables have other similar definitions, the common factor is that vegetables are an important source of nutrients, potassium, fiber, and vitamins.
Some of the vegetables that are rich in anti-oxidants include: carrots, corn, peppers, oregano, pinto beans, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, squash, sweet potatoes, raw nuts and seeds.
Greens leaf vegetables are a great source of antioxidants and fiber, like Romaine Lettuce and Spinach.
Foreign dishes and healthy food.
After the flight and your first foreign language experience. The first thought is to fill oneself with some native delight – even sweets.

Have some cocoa, or a piece of dark chocolate. Yes, chocolate – it’s made of cocoa.
Chocolate is cocoa with sugar. Without sugar it’s Cocoa.
Cocoa has health benefits. Cocoa helps relief high blood pressure, obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, asthma and cancer.
It also has alot of cosmetic benefits.
There are varities of dark chocolates. The grading system may vary between countries.
